Data and information

Data and information: These two expressions are not the same thing. Data can be some information only if the recipient / reader can understand the content. In the IT world we can get in touch with the expressions like data and information. In many situations these two can be mixed up which is pretty normal and easy to understand when people actually do not understand the real meaning of these two words. However we can illustrate the difference by giving the flowing example: If you write an email in Swedish and send it to some Chinese recipient, then the recipient will not be able to understand the content and he or she will see a bunch of data without understanding the content. It would be the same effect if the sender and the recipient roles were reversed. (The only exception is if they knew the language written in that email.) If the email is written so the recipient can understand the content, then it is an information. In the world of programming we have different ways of storing the data. E.g. a variable, or if we call it "something that contains something" is a good example. A variable can contain some data that can be sent as an email message and / or be shown somewhere. In many cases the data is stored in some database and it can be used when reading the content from the database. When the content appears on e.g. a website, it is some information if it is written in an understandable language. Other ways it is some data. In many cases the websites are created so that their content appears translated in different languages depending on who is expected to visit the website. data and information The image showing us some data is found at Google and it  belongs to  footage.framepool.com . Programming languages are also some kind of data if the reader can not understand it but it can be usable information for those who understand it. In Sweden we have an interesting situation. The Swedish word dator means computer and we can very often here that people mix up the words data and dator. It is easy to understand what someone really means by using the word data instead of dator. We are very lucky that this confusion has not created any big misunderstandings since the word data also is easy to mix up with the information as we can see above. So the conclusion is that data and information are not the same thing. Data can be some information only if the recipient/reader can understand the content and of course no one of these two words has connection to the Swedish word dator since that word actually means a computer.
