Tornado or Twister - be ready no matter the name. The movie we watched has inspired us to write this article. At the same time our curiosity made us to take a closer look at this devastating wind and what to do if it reaches us.

We spontaneously watched a movie from 2024. Its name is Twisters. A very interesting one, even if we do not really think that it is worth watching again. However, during the movie we got distracted by some thoughts about those strong and devastating winds. How devastating can they be and how can we protect ourselves?

A tornado, also known as a twister, is according to Wikipedia, a rapidly rotating column of air that extends vertically from the surface of the Earth to the base of a cumulonimbus or cumulus cloud. Twister seems to be just a nickname for tornado and no matter the name, this wind can reach high speeds such as 500 km/h. Those winds with that rotating speed are extremely devastating.

How can we protect ourselves if a tornado or a twister are coming towards us? As a house owner, it is best if you have a basement. Many houses have it, but people also can use other shared buildings designed as shelter against dangerous situations. Another possible solution is to go in the middle of the house, maybe in the bathroom and lay down on the floor.

If a tornado destroy your house, you probably will have to build a new one. In that case, it is good to have a standard homeowners insurance. Probably they have different rules and requirements, but it should be possible for every house owner to build a new home or to repair the damaged one.
