In different articles we wrote about the StopSpamApi plugin. Its purpose is to stop different spam comments generated by non-human visitors on WordPress websites. The developer Begacom IT Business decided to create this plugin as an API. The reason is simple: It is easier to work with updates when everything is at one place. At the same time this solution makes it easy to analyze the efficiency of the plugin.
We have done a fast control of this StopSpamApi plugin by checking its access logs. They show how and from which IP address the plugin is used. This control has been done by comparing number of attempts in the logs with the actual amount of newly registered comments inside wp-admin. There we can see a noticeable difference.
We can say that the plugin works just as expected. The comment content is mostly a typical spam content regardless if a comment was registered or not. It is obvious that registered comments must pass through a control. That is only possible if some requirements are fulfilled. For example, the code that should be written in a comment form must be correct. We could see attempts with different codes and they were probably wrong when they were used. Therefore the comments were stopped on the way in to the database.
The fact that only few comments passed through tells us that the protection is good. However, we can not say if the registered comments were sent by humans or non-human visitors. On the other side this plugin fulfills its purpose.
Unfortunately, Begacom IT Business has not developed any similar protection for websites that are not created in WordPress. It is so because the number of requests and feedback have not been high enough. That is why this company has not got inspired to develop a new solution.
