Reading or listening, what do you prefer? This article is meant to be just a short analysis of our new way of absorbing an information. With this said, we want to try to see if there are some positive or negative sides of our choice. Let us take a look at online articles first.
Just like regular articles in newspapers or magazines, online articles require reading. That means that we have to spend some time reading and not doing anything else. It is not possible to read and follow an article at the same time as we do other things. For example, is it possible to read an article in a mobile phone while running? No, it would not be s good idea.
Watching TV and reading an online article at the same time is a possible situation, but it is not preferable when it is about bigger or more requiring articles. We simply can not concentrate on relevant details if our reading is distracted by something else. An online article, just like a regular one is practical when we want to read something without need of being isolated from surrounding sounds.
Let us now take a look at podcasts. What is it? Simply explained, it is a form of a written article but it is an audio file instead. You find something interesting to listen at instead of reading and that’s it. With some good headphones you can listen at any podcast while e.g. running, swimming, skiing, paddling or simply walking. You do not need to sit down, hold the phone in hands and read.
Podcasts are a very good solution when we want or need to optimally use our time. Listening at something in a bus or in a train on the way to work is maybe easier than reading because we can close the eyes and relax. Podcast is also a good solution for getting informed by driving or biking.
Hopefully we have succeeded to clarify the difference between podcasts and online articles. At least we have explained when they are usable. Reading is probably better than listening when the content is important but difficult to follow without going back some lines sometimes. Listening is a better choice when we for example learn a new language and want to improve our understanding of something we hear.
