Dark and cold days are here but we can make them warmer. Halloween pumpkins are visible around us and we can see them on the streets, close to the doors, on TV and Internet. They are visible and they remind us of something. It is Halloween time! What happens at Halloween? What is this actually about?
As we all know Halloween is a celebration in remembrance of the dead that occurs annually on the evening of October 31. It is a All Saints' Evening. One interesent historical details is that Saints have been known as hallows. It is derived from the Old English word hālig and related to the German word heilig. Heilig means holy.
Halloween is also time when children and adults play Trick-or-treat in the evening before All Saints’ Day on the November 1st. Children in costumes go from house to house and ask for treats with the phrase "Trick or treat". The "treat" is usually candy. In some cultures it can be money. The "trick" is a threat to perform mischief on the homeowner or their property if no treat is given. This sounds negative but it can be a very fun experience, especially for the kids.
But not everyone plays this game. People can enjoy it on different ways. Some people are sad and light candles for dead family members or friends but some just enjoy at home or outside by socializing. It can be very relaxing to enjoy this time together with people we like.
In some cases companies and other groups arrange some kind of private Halloween party just to make the socializing more interesting and little bit different. Therefore, this time is a nice time.
